Uttar Pradesh is a state of North India. With more than 200 million inhabitants, it is the most populous state in India, as well as the most populous country subdivision in the world. It was established on 1 April 1937 during the British rule as the United Provinces of Agra and Awadh. During British rule it was called United Province which was changed to Uttar Pradesh in 1950. In this way, the abbreviation remained unchanged even after changing the official name of the province called U.P. in general parlance. The administrative and legislative capital of the state is Lucknow, and the judicial capital is Allahabad Prayagraj, and for administrative reasons it is divided into 18 divisions and 75 districts. On 9 November 2000, a new state, Uttarakhand, was created from the Himalayan mountainous region of the state. The two major rivers of the state, the Ganges and the Yamuna, meet at Prayagraj and then flow further into the Ganges. Hindi is the most widely spoken language in the state, and is also the official language of the state.
